But there is another problem for the oil men. Bin Laden lives in Afghanistan and his supporters hate the USA. Did you happen to catch any TV, say, mid-September?

not about the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge _________________________________________________________ The text which follows will make more sense if you have a map in front of you. To the north of Afghanistan is one of the world's richest oil fields. This oil field is on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea. American oil companies are involved. There is the opportunity of wealth on an extreme scale. But there is a problem for the oil men. This oil field is land locked. This oil must be moved from the oil field to a sea port. At a port,  the oil can be collected by ocean-going tankers. The most direct route from the oil field to a sea port, is south through Iran. For the oil companies,  this route has the advantage that they would only need to build a short pipeline to the existing Iranian pipeline network. But it is unlikely that any U.S. government would approve of the oil companies using an Iranian pipeline network. The alternative route is east from the Caspian Sea and south through Afghanistan.  Then south through Pakistan to a sea port. To put the pipeline through Afghanistan would need the agreement of the Taleban There would be considerable benefits to the Pakistan economy if the pipeline passed through their territory. But there is another problem for the oil men. Bin Laden lives in Afghanistan and his supporters hate the USA. _________________________________________________________

Does Get a life have a meaning? I am amazed at how some people can turn anything into oil.

I got news for you, Bucko.  The US government has very little control or influence over multinational oil companies beyond the borders of the US. If the oil companies decide that an Iranian pipelines is economically viable, it will happen.  Note that economic viability includes political considerations in Iran and elsewhere in the region.  They are not going to build a pipeline in an unstable region which is why a tremendous amount of oil still sits under Baku. -JR
