Modern PC processors kick out around 50W of heat. How many of these run all day across the world? How many are actually running minimal tasks such as word processing most of the time? The excesses of the ICT industry encourage people to throw hardware away every 3 years and does nothing to encourage recycling and extending the life of current hardware. Thin client technologies can make a big difference because terminals can be older and lower performance machines (lower power consumption and extends the life of the machines) and with free software such as Linux this also saves massive amounts in software licensing. The main snag is educating people to know how to do  these things yet Government does virtually nothing. Since such a strategy would also benefit a social inclusion policy by getting the price point of ICT access down it seems strange that a Government with policies to promote socialinclusion and protect the enviroment do so little in the field of ICT.
