AMENDMENT II, WORD BY WORD GUNS AND CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS I have just finished reading another headline about a schoolchild who has shot his classmates. This one was a middle schooler in Oklahoma. Surely, the following words have been posted many times in this and other newsgroups, but I want to go over them again to see if we can make some sense of it: ********** ARTICLE II A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. ********** Because I don't have a legal degree and freely confess my ignorance of the legal and consitutional literature, I will have to resort to using the dictionary. (Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Tenth Edition, 1994) First, my general point of view, in case you don't want to read the details: I think guns are inherently dangerous and far too easily obtainable in our country. They are a necessary evil whose sole purpose is to destroy, although occasionally that destruction is necessary for the protection of good people from bad people. I believe the emphasis of the Second Amendment is on well regulated, which is why I think our founding fathers put it first in the sentence. Without such regulation, gun rights merely allow the chaotic accumulation of weapons that become like landmines, blowing away those who cross their paths. Now, here are the details, which is essentially going word-by-word through the amendment:
